Ruby petroleum project : McDermott International has been selected by BHP to provide a large subsea umbilicals, risers and flowlines (SURF), transportation, and installation contract for the Ruby field development in Trinidad and Tobago waters.

The contract also requires McDermott to deliver transportation and installation (T&I) services as well as pre-commissioning of a jacket and topsides for the $500 million Ruby oil and gas project.

The Ruby field is located in Block 3(a) development area, about 45 kilometers off the north-eastern coast of Trinidad.

Mark Coscio, Senior Vice President, North, Central and South America, commenting on the Ruby petroleum project contract,  said: “We are pleased to support BHP in this new contract that continues to build on our successful track record in Trinidad. The combination of heavy lift and pipelay capabilities of McDermott’s Derrick Lay Vessel (DLV) 2000 are best suited for this project as it can efficiently transport and install both the flowlines and platform.”

 The engineering and project management services of the oil and gas project in Trinidad and Tobago will be taken care of by McDermott’s Houston location along with support from its Mexico City office.

McDermott said that the Derrick Lay Vessel 2000 is slated to transport and install the flowlines and platform for the Ruby petroleum project. The company has started its contract work immediately and aims to wrap it up in August 2020.

Ruby field estimates

The Ruby oil and gas field is estimated to contain recoverable 2C resources of 13.2 million barrels of oil and 274 billion cubic feet of natural gas. As per BHP, the Ruby petroleum project involves drilling of five production wells that will be tied back using the latent capacity of the existing processing facilities, proven technology of the existing operated asset, along with ocean bottom node seismic imaging.

BHP, which has an operating stake of 68.46% in the Ruby oil and gas project, had sanctioned the field development in August 2019 with its investment share being $283m. Heritage Petroleum and the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago (NGC) are BHP’s partners in the Ruby petroleum project with respective stakes of 20.13% and 11.41%.
