Ras Laffan Petrochemical Project : Consolidated Contractors Company bags early site works contract

QatarEnergy and Chevron Phillips Chemical Company (CPChem) have awarded the early site works contract for the Ras Laffan Petrochemical Project (RLPP) to Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC).

According to QatarEnergy, Consolidated Contractors Company has been given a lump-sum contract for preparing the site for the new petrochemical project to be located within Ras Laffan Industrial City.

Consolidated Contractors Company is expected to begin the early works this month. After its conclusion, the engineer, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the Ras Laffan Petrochemical Project is likely to be awarded, said QatarEnergy.

Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi — QatarEnergy President and CEO as well as the Qatari Minister of State for Energy Affairs said: “The award of this contract marks the start of the execution phase of RLPP, which is a major building block in QatarEnergy’s efforts to further expand and diversify its business portfolio and implement world-class downstream project.

“This project will increase Qatar’s polyethylene output capacity by approximately 64%.”

Announced in 2019, the Ras Laffan Petrochemical Project is a joint venture between QatarEnergy and the US-based Chevron Phillips Chemical Company.

The Ras Laffan petrochemical complex will have an ethane cracking unit with a capacity of 2,080 kilo tons per annum (KTA). Besides, the petrochemical project in Qatar will have a couple of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) units.

Having completed the front end engineering and design (FEED) last year, the Ras Laffan Petrochemical Project is presently in the EPC tendering phase. After the tendering is over and a final investment decision is taken, the petrochemical project will move into the EPC phase.

QatarEnergy expects to begin production at the Ras Laffan Petrochemical Project in 2026.
