Nel to deliver alkaline electrolyzer system for Solar Foods’ Factory 01

Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser, a subsidiary of Nel ASA, has won an order from Solar Foods for delivering an alkaline electrolyzer system to generate green hydrogen to enable the Finnish food-tech startup to produce food from CO2 and electricity.

The alkaline electrolyzer system will be installed at Factory 01, which is the new production facility of Solar Foods being built in Vantaa, Finland, said Nel, which is a Norway-based hydrogen company.

The purchase orders have a value of around €2 million and the equipment delivery is expected to be late-2022 or early-2023.

Solar Foods is expected to begin commercial production of Solein, that is food produced from CO2 and electricity, in the first half of next year.

Factory 01 will operate s Solar Foods’ platform for ramping up production.

Solein is made by using a bioprocess in which microbes are fed with gases such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and oxygen along with small amounts of nutrients.
