Ørsted said that the installation of the final turbine of the 120MW Formosa 1 offshore wind farm phase 2 in Taiwan has been completed.

The Formosa 1 offshore wind project, which is the commercial-scale offshore wind farm in Taiwan, comprises 20 wind turbines, each of 6MW capacity. The Taiwanese offshore wind farm will be able to meet the power consumption needs of 128,000 households, once it begins commercial operations by the end of 2019.

The offshore construction of Formosa 1 phase 2 began in May 2019, and the first turbine was erected in late July. After facing some weather-related challenges, all the wind turbines were installed and are entering into the commissioning phase gradually.

Commenting on the Formosa 1 offshore wind farm phase 2, Matthias Bausenwein – Formosa 1 chairman and the President of Ørsted Asia Pacific, said: “The Formosa 1 project team and the joint venture partners, Ørsted, JERA, Macquarie Capital, and Swancor, have faced various challenges in the past few months. The installation of the last wind turbine not only marks the completion of the construction work, but also symbolises that we now have built valuable construction experience in Taiwan.

“All Formosa 1 wind turbines will start powering soon, and then reach commercial operation by the end of the year. Formosa 1 will become a paradigm for Taiwan’s energy transition.”

The installation work for the Formosa 1 offshore wind farm phase 2 was done by Jan De Nul for foundation and cable installation, Siemens Gamesa for the wind turbines, and Fortune Electric for onshore electrical systems.

The Formosa 1 offshore wind project is co-owned by Ørsted (35%), JERA (32.5%), Macquarie Capital (25%), and Swancor Holdings (7.5%).

In September 2019, phase 2 of the Formosa 1 offshore wind project produced its first power. The first phase of the Taiwanese offshore wind project comprises a couple of 4MW wind turbines, which were commissioned in April 2017.
