Formosa 1 offshore wind farm : Jan De Nul wraps up installation of foundations for phase 2
Jan De Nul Group has wrapped up the installation of all the 20 foundations for the second phase of the 120MW Formosa 1 offshore wind farm off the coast of Taiwan.
The Formosa 1 offshore wind project is owned by Formosa I Wind Power, a partnership between Orsted (35%), Macquarie Capital (25%), JERA (32.5%), and Swancor (7.5%). The Taiwanese offshore wind farm is being built in the Taiwan Strait, 6km off the west coast of the Miaoli district.
The foundations of the offshore wind farm in Taiwan consist of a monopole and transition piece structure having a grouted connection. The transition pieces, in turn, consist of five internal platforms, an external platform and boat landing with each piece weighing 465 tonnes.
Jan De Nul deployed the Seaway Yudin vessel to install the monopiles and transition pieces under a design, procurement and installation contract it had bagged in May 2018. The contract’s scope also has scour protection and cable installation.

According to Jan De Nul, it has managed to wrap up the fabrication process, the sea transport, the load in and out at the marshaling harbour in the Port of Taichung, and eventually the installation of all the 20 foundations offshore over a period of less than 12 months. The construction engineering company, which is based in Luxembourg, said that it has been simultaneously installing scour protection, export and inter-array cables to accelerate the completion of the project.
The Formosa 1 offshore wind farm is being developed in a couple of phases with the first of which involving the installation of just the two wind turbines with a combined capacity of 8MW. The second phase will have 20 6MW offshore wind turbines.
The Taiwanese offshore wind farm is targeted to be fully commissioned by the year-end.
