Bharti Airtel subsidiary launches hyperscale data center park in Chennai

Bharti Airtel said that its data center subsidiary — Nxtra by Airtel has launched a new 38MW hyperscale data center park in Chennai, its third such large facility in the Tamil Nadu capital.

The Airtel data center facility was digitally unveiled by Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin.

According to Bharti Airtel, the LEED certified facility spans more than 270,000 sft.

The new data center is said to be integrated fully with Bharti Airtel’s global submarine cable network, which ensures an end-to-end secure connectivity solution to hyperscalers.

Ajay Chitkara — Airtel Business Director and CEO said: “This is a major milestone in our journey as we scale up aggressively to serve the emerging digital India opportunity. Chennai, with its strategic location and access to cable landing stations, has the potential to become a regional data center hub for South Asia.

“Nxtra by Airtel is already serving large Indian and global customers from the city and we will continue to invest to expand our operations here. I compliment the State Government for providing an enabling environment and infrastructure support to set up this vital digital infrastructure.”

Nxtra by Airtel has 11 hyperscale and 120 edge data centers in India now apart from managing critical submarine landing stations.

To serve the large demand for reliable data centre solutions in India, Nxtra by Airtel will invest INR 5,000 crores by 2025 to boost its capacity three times to more than 400MW. This will involve establishing hyperscale data center parks in major metro cities.

Nxtra by Airtel is said to be scaling up use of green energy already for its data centres and is targeting to meet 50% of the power requirements of its data centres through renewable sources as part of the overall GHG emission reduction targets of Bharti Airtel.
